Hello, and welcome to the class!  Your instructor is a 30-year trucking industry veteran, serving as an EVP and Chief Financial and Human Resources Officer.  My career started in the early '90s with Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement before moving into the private industry.  I genuinely love my job and the organization I represent.  My ultimate career goal is to transition into full-time teaching at the university level, as this is one of my greatest passions.  I have been with IWU since the Fall semester of 2011.  I also teach for Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg, IN. and Indiana Institute of Technology in Ft. Wayne, IN.

My family and I live in southern Indiana across the bridge from Louisville. I have two children: a daughter (21), an elementary education major at Indiana University, and a son (19), a pre-med major at Purdue. My wife is a 1992 graduate from the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine, and has been a doctor of physical therapy for the past 30 years. Initially, we are from western Kentucky (Paducah area) and have been in the Louisville metro area since 1999 when our jobs took us away to the "big city," as our parents say.

In my "free time," if there is such a thing, I enjoy weekend getaways to anywhere in the Appalachia area, finding local restaurants, and checking out old hotels from the '40s and '50s. I love the era surrounding the times of big band sounds, early jazz, and old hotels.

My biggest challenge in life thus far was undertaking my first doctorate.  I've realized that "time" is my most precious commodity between family, work, and life.  Oddly enough, the escape of sorts I find solace in is teaching and being able to share academic experiences alongside my students.

I follow the IWU curriculum and protocol as prescribed in your student catalog and your course syllabus.  Please take a minute to review your syllabus and the information about this course and your online program.  I can attest to personal experience that online courses are not the "easy way out" to a manageable degree.  They require a great deal of work and time commitment on your behalf.

My preferred method of contact is via the university email system.  I will try and respond to your questions or comments within 24 hours.  I travel in my job, attend conferences, teach at symposiums, etc., so I may not always respond immediately, but it will be within 24 hours.  If it is urgent, you can contact me via my cell phone: 502.649.2429

My testimony takes me back to when I was nine years old. I grew up in a small farming community with a tiny Southern Baptist Church.  We hosted out-of-town, old-fashioned fire and brimstone preachers each summer for our annual "camp meeting" under the tent.  I often think back to those days and wonder if our world would be any different today if we went back to those times.

After four summer nights in the tent, the preacher's shouting and pulpit-pounding style finally broke the rebellious spirit of a 9-year-old.  The rest, they say, well, it's history.  I was blessed to have been raised in a Christian home and have never known what it's like not to have God in my life.  He is the foundation upon which my family builds our home, and our faith in Him carries us daily.

As we move forward together in your educational journey, I'll share with you one of my favorite scriptures:  Joshua 1:8: "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all
that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success." (ESV)

So many times I run across both students and employees that chase the wrong dreams for the wrong reasons.  Your educational journey, while strong in the pursuit of success, should never hinge on impending riches or prosperity in the things of this world. Instead, seek first His Kingdom and live according to God's plan for your life.

Now, let's learn together, and best of luck in all your classes here at IWU.

PS.. There is no "luck" involved.  Keep an unwavering faith in Christ and all your studies, make your way prosperous, and then you will succeed.
